Debbie Caddell, RE, CLS

The specialists at Caddell’s Laser & Electrolysis Clinic have a passion for removing hair.  As the owner of Caddell’s, I’ve been involved with electrolysis since 1982 and laser since 2000.

Here’s the scoop on lasers -

Lasers are attracted to melanin, which is the pigment in skin.  Melanin is in the skin and also hair. When the laser is fired, it emits a bright light that basically vaporizes the hair, thicker, darker hairs take fewer treatments than soft brown hairs.  The laser does not work on blonde, gray, or red hairs.

There are many lasers to choose from and they can be confusing to the general public because they vary in how they work. The Nd Yag laser is designed to penetrate deeper into the skin, thus avoiding attraction to the melanin on the surface of the skin.  Both Diode and Alexandrite are excellent for fair skinned people. These 2 lasers are considered monochromatic, which means they are attracted to one thing; melanin.  This is very important in order to destroy hair without damaging the skin.  Flashlamps are not lasers and they are polychromatic, which means there is an attraction to many colors.  Chances of getting burned are greater, and effectiveness is less.

When treating a client, we like to smell the hair burning, see redness (erythema), and also see slight bumpiness (follicular edema).  This tells us the laser was hot enough to achieve desired results.  The sun is our worst enemy, if a person has a tan, they should not have laser. Blistering can occur and it could take many months to heal.  It is best to wait 4 to 6 weeks, or until the tan has faded.

Training is extremely important when choosing a laser technician. Many times a person firing a laser only receives 4-8 hours of training from a nurse sent to them by the manufacturer.  All of the specialists at Caddell’s Laser & Electrolysis Clinic have taken a 40 hour course at Rocky Mountain Laser College in Denver, CO. They are certified by the department of higher education in Colorado.  Debbie and her staff attend laser workshops regularly in order to keep up on the latest technology.
